1 – Sacks and picks

Sunday marked another day where Buffalo's defense turned in some difference making type plays. It began with safety Jordan Poyer, during an early 11-on-11 series. Poyer was able to brace himself and wall off Brandon Reilly for position on an incoming pass from Nate Peterman and made the interception.

Veteran corner Vontae Davis took advantage of what appeared to be a miscommunication between Kelvin Benjamin and AJ McCarron.

Benjamin took his route upfield, but Davis could see that McCarron was throwing an out route and broke on the ball for the interception. He then made sure he got both feet in before his momentum took him over the sideline.

"We're growing each and every day helping each other on the field," said Poyer. "All of the guys have bought into the system and wanting to be great. Vontae has come in and meshed right in with the guys. We call him 'Uncle V' because he's the oldest guy in the secondary. He's meshed in really well. He communicates well and is always asking questions."

Buffalo's coverage has been consistent in the secondary, which has afforded the pass rushers up front to get home for tap out sacks. Among those who got to the quarterback up front were Eddie Yarbrough, safety L.J. McCray and DE Mike Love. There were a couple of other team sacks during the session.

The other interception on the day went to CB Breon Borders.

Josh Allen had fellow rookie Austin Proehl in his sights and fired a bullet 20 yards downfield to a streaking Proehl. But Proehl didn't get his head around to see the ball was coming. Borders had a read on the pass as soon as it was out of Allen's hand and promptly took it the other way.

2 – Murphy and Ford benefit in backfield

Early on in practice, veteran Chris Ivory and Travaris Cadet got the reps with the second team offense, but after the first team segment, Marcus Murphy and Keith Ford rotated in regularly.

Both Murphy and Ford have stacked a few good days together as the run game for the offense has hit its stride in camp when it comes to opening holes.

"Everybody does their job and be sound and be one," said Ford. "The consistency is just us working together and having a set goal of what we want to do on the field."

"We're just trying to come out and just work hard at everything," said Murphy. "I really don't pay attention to first team or second team and stuff like that. I just want to come in and get the most out of every rep. I just come in every day and work."

Ford, an undrafted rookie out of Texas A&M has had his moments. From his long run for a touchdown in Friday night's practice at New Era Field or converting a 4th-and-1 on a well-executed pitch play Sunday, Ford has found ways to get himself noticed in practice.

"A lot of people believe in me, but my focus is taking one day at a time and getting better studying and focus on the main goal instead of the main result," said Ford. "It's just a daily process and repetition and it was a good feeling to get extra reps today."

It's hard to see a way for Ford to move up the depth chart with vets like Travaris Cadet and Chris Ivory on the roster, but he's put his best foot forward thus far.

Murphy's situation looks a lot healthier. He's been used on a few special teams units and is in the regular rotation for the punt return job.

3 – Benjamin addresses Carolina comments

On the heels of some comments made by Kelvin Benjamin about his former team and the Carolina Panthers earlier this weekend, the wide receiver chose to clear the air following Sunday's practice.

Benjamin didn't deny his insinuation that his time in Carolina wasn't all he hoped it would be after spending most of his first four season with the Panthers. He does understand however, how his comments could impact his club.

"It's all about the team, and that can be distracting to the team," said Benjamin of his comments, which included an indication that his statistics would've been better with a true pocket quarterback rather than Cam Newton. "I'm not focused on that, what's said is said. I am just focused on our team and that's it."

"There's a time and a place for things like that and this was not one of them," said head coach Sean McDermott. "We have a lot of respect for our opponents, number one and that's everyone in the league. I've spoken with Kelvin and that's not how I want us to handle things like that. So, we'll move forward as a team."

Benjamin claimed his comments were in the heat of the moment, and he intends to talk to some of his former Carolina teammates when the Panthers come to Buffalo for the preseason opener on Thursday night.

"There are a lot of great guys on that team," he said. "All of those guys."
