The Bills took another step in re-signing their own on Wednesday as they came to an agreement on a contract with free agent safety Bryan Scott.
"I wanted to be in Buffalo," said Scott. "It's my home and I wanted to be there. I'm proud to say I'm still a Bill."
Scott, who has spent the last five seasons with the Bills, is coming off a season in which he tied his career highs in pass breakups and interceptions, including one INT that he returned for his first career touchdown in Week 4 at Cincinnati. The safety appeared in all 16 games for Buffalo last season and made seven starts. He believes the defense is ready to take the next step.
"The defense obviously the numbers didn't show it, but there was just a little thing here or there," he said. "We're knocking on the door and I just really wanted to be a part of it. I think we've started something and made progress and I just want to see it through."
The nine-year veteran's most important role was that of a hybrid safety/linebacker in the team's nickel packages. Often times Scott was assigned the opponent's pass catching tight end in coverage. Knowing that defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt has stated he needs linebackers that can run, it's very likely that Scott will remain in a hybrid type role.
"I think just in life the more caps you can wear the more valuable you are," said Scott. "Whether it's on the back end as a safety or whether it's going to down in the nickel package as a linebacker whatever they ask me to do I'm just willing and ready to do."
With Scott back in the fold the Bills now have five safeties on their current offseason roster.
