Bills head coach Doug Marrone didn't deny the obvious. After losing his second starting quarterback in as many preseason games he knows they'll have to add a free agent signee for at least the time being with undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel as their only healthy signal caller.
Doug Marrone on #Bills QB situation: "I'm not going to sit here an say everything is fine and dandy. It's a concern" — Buffalo Bills (@buffalobills) August 24, 2013
"That's correct and we'll be looking at bringing quarterbacks in," said Marrone.
Media reports were already circulating possible names with FOX Sports 1's Mike Garafolo and ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting that free agent veteran Matt Leinart would work out on Sunday for Buffalo. Garafolo also reported that John Beck would be coming in for a workout.
Marrone also gave indication that Brad Smith would help out at quarterback as he was apparently an emergency quarterback plan all along.
"We had a plan going in," he said. "We had two plans when Jeff (Tuel) was in the game. So obviously Brad (Smith) was a part of those plans as well as Fred Jackson."
EJ Manuel is expected to miss the remainder of the preseason , but Marrone is holding out hope that the Bills top draft choice can be ready to practice the week leading up to the season opener against New England.
"That's what I'm hoping for," said Marrone. "He had the procedure done and he was with us on the field the other day just watching and observing. I think we just have to wait until that period where the doctor looks at him and says, 'Here's where we are.' Because people recover so differently from minor stuff."
