The Bills wasted little time filling the vacancy on the 53-man roster created by the release of quarterback Trent Edwards. Buffalo re-signed Levi Brown Tuesday, the rookie they took in the seventh round of last April's draft.
Brown (6'4" 223) was released Sept. 4 during final cuts when the team had to reduce their roster to 53. Head coach Chan Gailey at the time thought highly of Brown and the progress he made by the close of the preseason.
"He's got great potential, there's no question about that," said Gailey. "I think he understands the game. He has a great feel for things."
After final cuts were made Gailey explained that the reason Brown was not retained on the 53-man roster was because the more experienced signal callers offered the team a better chance to win right now were they to be thrust into a game.
But it's clear the Bills are interested in developing Brown further as he will now serve as the team's third quarterback.
"We liked him when he was (first) here," Gailey said Monday.
Brown should be able to hit the ground running as he has not been immersed in any other NFL offense since he was released by Buffalo.
At the close of the preseason when asked to assess where he felt he made the most progress, Brown's answer was concise.
"I think just learning the offense," said Brown. "Every day I learned more about it."
