Bills head coach Chan Gailey and his staff began the process of whittling down their offseason roster a day before cuts had to be made. Buffalo released three players from their squad a full 24 hours prior to the league deadline, parting ways with OL Kyle Calloway, DT Lonnie Harvey and WR Aaron Rhea.
Calloway was the team's final draft choice this past spring, the second of two seventh-round picks. The Iowa product was viewed as a guard-tackle prospect, but found it difficult to crack the team's two-deep. Throughout training camp Calloway ran with the third team offensive line at right tackle.
Harvey spent the last half of the 2009 season on Buffalo's practice squad after originally entering the NFL as an undrafted rookie with the Carolina Panthers earlier that year. Harvey was caught in a numbers game with veteran Kyle Williams and second-round pick Torell Troup ahead of him on the depth chart at nose tackle.
Rhea was a late training camp addition after the wide receiver position was hit with a rapid fire string of injuries. The Stephen F. Austin product was signed by the team Aug. 16. Rhea was an undrafted rookie this past spring and originally signed with Minnesota.
These player moves will have Buffalo's roster at the required 75 by 4 pm Tuesday along with rookies Danny Batten and Marcus Easley on injured reserve. The deadline for the roster cut to 53 will be Saturday, Sept. 4 at 6 pm.
