For the second straight week the Bills added reinforcements at the quarterback position signing Matt Flynn. Fortunately it sounds as if Buffalo won't need to press a new signal caller into their starting lineup this weekend in Miami.
Interim starting QB Thad Lewis finished Sunday's game, but suffered a sprained foot. X-rays and an MRI all came back negative leaving head coach Doug Marrone encouraged about Lewis' availability this week.
"We're going to list him day-to-day because he was injured," said Marrone. "He didn't really know exactly what play (it happened). He'll be listed day-to-day and I think he'll be out there (for practice) Wednesday and I feel good about him being able to play on Sunday."
Lewis will be very motivated to be ready for Sunday's game. The Opa-Locka, Florida native grew up just miles from Sun Life Stadium. Being able to return home to make his third NFL start will have Lewis doing everything in his power to be ready to play.
Backup QB to be determinedWith the signing of veteran free agent Matt Flynn, Buffalo's backup quarterback situation is a bit more unclear. Rookie Jeff Tuel knows the offense inside and out, but Marrone left the door open for Flynn to possibly serve as the backup quarterback Sunday in Miami.
Marrone confirmed that if Flynn can effectively grasp the offense to a point where he can execute the game plan he would be the backup to Lewis with Tuel as the third quarterback. With Flynn just signing on Monday Marrone and his offensive staff have to evaluate Flynn and his retention rate through the middle of the week.
"We haven't worked with him so as far as the background it all depends on how fast we can get him ready," said Marrone. "So if Thad is not ready to go and we can't get Matt ready then we'll put Jeff in there and play with him."
Flynn, who spent the first five years of his career in a West Coast scheme feels there is a measure of carry over to Buffalo's offense.
"I just got out of a meeting with Coach Hackett," said Flynn. "I think we're going to hit it off well. I like what they're doing offensively. I didn't know a whole lot about it coming in, but as soon as I knew I was coming in for a workout I tried to do as much research as I could, and I feel like I'll fit into this offense."
Tuel is just biding his time and focusing on improving his game knowing the coaching staff wants to see development from him.
"I'm prepared for whatever the coaches need me to do," said Tuel.
