Bills head coach Chan Gailey said after the game Sunday that it looked bad for David Nelson, and they'd have a definitive prognosis Monday. Unfortunately for the Bills slot receiver his 2012 season is over.
"It was a bad knee injury," said Gailey, who would not disclose the nature of the knee injury. "It's a setback and we've got to get some other people up and going that's just part of it.
The injury happened in the fourth quarter. Nelson was running a simple out route on the left side of the formation when his right leg appeared to buckle on the receiver as he tried to come out of his break and he crumpled to the turf.
"That's a really tough loss for us," said Ryan Fitzpatrick. "Something like that just kills me. I lose sleep over something like that. He's such a great guy and worked so hard to get to where he is right now. He was primed to have a big year. Our chemistry was great. We were really on the same page with a lot of stuff we were doing. That's something you never want to see."
With Nelson's impending injured reserve designation, a roster spot will open up on the 53-man roster.
"We're still in the decision making stage about how exactly we're going to handle that scenario," said Gailey.
Buffalo currently has four other receivers on the roster and QB/WR Brad Smith.
