The Bills lined up their first free agent visit of the NFL signing period on the same day the market opened as offensive lineman Wade Smith arrived at One Bills Drive Friday.
Smith (6'4", 296) is an eight-year veteran that has played mostly guard and center in his time in the league. He has 34 starts in his career and spent the last two seasons in Kansas City where he made 16 of those starts serving mainly at right guard.
Buffalo's coaching staff is very familiar with Smith's abilities as Bills offensive line coach Joe D'Alessandris coached him the past two seasons with the Chiefs, while Gailey was his offensive coordinator in 2008.
Smith is also very familiar with the AFC East having been a former third-round pick of the Miami Dolphins (2003) where he played his first four seasons in the league before signing with the New York Jets as a free agent in 2006.
The 28-year old is a capable starter and reliable insurance at both the guard and center positions with Eric Wood still rehabbing from leg surgery and no viable backup center behind starter Geoff Hangartner on the roster.
