The Bills wasted little time in making a change on special teams less than 24 hours after their loss to Cleveland Thursday night. Buffalo released punter Shawn Powell Friday.
The second-year punter struggled in each of his past two games as kicking with consistency proved to be an issue for him. In the last two games Powell was a bit erratic. Against Baltimore and Cleveland he punted 16 times, but had a subpar net average of just 30 yards.
Directional punting was also an issue at times and he had a couple of mis-hit attempts in each of the last two outings.
The Bills were victimized on some long punt returns against the Browns including a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown by Travis Benjamin. Benjamin set a Cleveland franchise record for punt return yards in a game with 179.
Buffalo might consider re-signing Powell's chief training camp competition in Brian Stahovich. Stahovich is currently a free agent.
