QB Matt Flynn signs with Bills

The plans to take a closer look at free agent quarterback Matt Flynn were in the works before [Thad Lewisinternal-link-placeholder-0] suffered a sprained foot in Sunday's game. Reports had the former Raiders quarterback flying into town before the Bills overtime loss to the Bengals for a workout. Not long after his Monday morning workout at One Bills Drive Buffalo signed the veteran signal caller.

"I'm extremely excited to be here," said Flynn. "I think it's a great opportunity. I get to come in and learn a different offense and just get to keep playing and that's the main thing. Just being around here all day and I enjoyed being around the town, I enjoyed being around the guys just seeing everything, the facilities and everything like that. I'm excited and I'm ready to start digging into the playbook."

"Matt Flynn we talked about bringing him in for a workout prior to the game," said head coach Doug Marrone. "That was in the plans. All we're doing is just trying to make sure on our roster that we have enough players with the amount of injuries that we've had. We're backed up with people who can go out there and do it. The tough part is getting them ready to go. Seeing how fast can you get somebody ready?"

Flynn, 28, was released by the Oakland Raiders last week. He was competing to be the starter for the Raiders, but eventually lost the job to Terrelle Pryor. He appeared in two games for Oakland, including one start. He completed 22-34 (64.7%) for 246 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

For his career, Flynn has completed just over 62 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has a career passer rating of 90.4.

In 2012, Flynn (6'2" 230) signed a long-term contract with Seattle as a free agent and was thought to be the team's new starting quarterback, until the emergence of then rookie Russell Wilson. He appeared in just three games for the Seahawks last season. Seattle then traded him to Oakland this past offseason.

A former seventh-round pick of the Green Bay Packers (2008) where he served as a backup quarterback his first four NFL seasons, Flynn has three career starts.

What likely made him attractive to the Bills is he is well-versed in West Coast system terminology, which makes up a good portion of Buffalo's offensive playbook. Flynn will spend the next two days in meetings with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

"I anticipate a lot of the same concepts that I'm used to," said Fynn. "How it's called, I don't really know yet.  I'm sure if they're doing some fast paced tempo stuff it's going to be calling it a little bit different than an actual long huddle call or something like that.  I think conceptually, it will be easier to pick up."

Buffalo now has four quarterbacks on their active roster with EJ Manuel out indefinitely with a knee injury, Thad Lewis with a sprained foot, Jeff Tuel healthy and Flynn.

Meeks to I-R, designated to return
To make room for Flynn on the roster the Bills placed rookie safety Jonathan Meeks on the injured reserve, designated to return list. Meeks suffered an undisclosed lower leg injury in the first half of Sunday's game and did not return.
