Rookies Get Extra Reps

A morning walk through that was originally scheduled for 45 minutes was doubled in length before all was said and done Tuesday at St. John Fisher. The last half of the practice was all 7-on-7 red zone work.

J.P. Losman led the first team and threw a bullet to Josh Reed over the middle, but under live hitting conditions there's a good chance Reed would have been separated from the ball by a hard-charging Ko Simpson who pulled up at the goal line.

Losman completed a tight pass inside to Kevin Everett who returned from a sore foot and smartly turned his body before the ball arrived to shield the incoming pass from the defender. Losman praised him for the heady play.

The quarterback's next pass however, was almost picked off by Paul Posluszny, who appeared to bait the throw to the end zone before closing the window. Losman was trying to hit Shaud Williams after he ran a route out of the backfield.

Losman's next pass was also broken up on a nice play by Jason Webster, who retreated into the back corner of the end zone to help another defensive back in zone coverage with Lee Evans the intended target. Webster has had a nice first week.

After that Craig Nall and Trent Edwards pretty much took over as rookies and other depth players that don't see many reps were given an extended look in more 7-on-7 red zone work.

The defense really carried the play during this segment.

Edwards took the majority of the snaps during the "rookie period." Edwards' third attempt was almost intercepted by a diving John Wendling in the end zone, but he couldn't quite come up with it. Another pass was also broken up by safety Jon Corto.

Nall was sprinkled in for some snaps as well and his second throw was broken up by Eric Bassey. He did have a nice looking pass to Jemalle Cornelius and another to Justin Jenkins. Jenkins on his second reception from Nall however, was stripped by Ashton Youboty and before the ball hit the ground safety Trevor Hooper collected it and ran the other way with it.

Edwards had a touchdown pass to Donovan Morgan and also had a scoring strike in tight to Matt Murphy as he managed to get enough separation from Wendling. But on the last play of the series when Edwards went to Murphy in the flat, he bobbled the ball as he tried to turn upfield and Wendling took it right out of the air and quickly headed the other way with it.

Tuesday's night practice will be in full pads and begins at 7pm.
