It used to be a short run from Buffalo to Rochester. Then it expanded going down to his Mid-Atlantic roots in Virginia. In 2011 Bills former Pro Bowl guard Ruben Brown is taking his motorcycle run cross country beginning July 15th.
"I'm going cross country to raise money in an awareness campaign for the Salvation Army programs," Brown told Buffalobills.com. "They've got tons of programs and at each stop we're going to showcase another program that the Salvation Army does in the community."
The route begins in Buffalo with scheduled stops in 17 cities over the course of a month including Nashville, Little Rock, Dallas and Los Angeles.
"It's going to be a monster of a ride, but I've got a couple of buddies that are going to follow me," said Brown. "I'm going to do the entire thing on my motorcycle."
Brown realizes it's not going to be easy doing all that riding over 30 straight days, but he's hopeful that riders that are scheduled to join him along the way for parts of the route will give him an energy boost when he needs it most.
"I'm going to meet up with different guys along the way that are going to come ride with me and cheer me on," he said. "The mayor of El Paso is going to ride with me. A couple of guys in Memphis have some stuff planned. We're going to stop at some historic spots. Milwaukee, the Harley Davidson museum, we'll be able to go in there.
"This isn't something anyone has to sign up for, just go to my site and I'll tell you where I'm going to be and if you're in the area come by and support the cause. We're just trying to get more awareness for the Salvation Army and what they do."
Brown is even scheduled to meet up with former teammates Jerry Ostroski in Tulsa, Oklahoma and John Fina in Tucson, Arizona.
"They've both got something planned," said Brown with a grin.
The westernmost stop is Los Angeles before Brown works back across the country through Las Vegas, Denver, Sturgis (SD), Milwaukee, Chicago, Cleveland and finally back to Buffalo.
Total trip mileage is 7,129 miles, which averages out to 237 miles per day, but Brown is undaunted.
"I've got a brand new bike," he said. "It's a 2011 Harley Davidson Road Glide Ultra. It is the big dog of cross country bikes. I'll be ready."
