Buffalo set a team record for total offense (583 yards), and Jim Kelly set a regular-season career-high with 381 passing yards. Thurman Thomas became the first Bill in history with 100 rushing and receiving yards in the same game.

In a Labor Day special, the Bills ripped Cleveland at Municipal Stadium, 34-20, as Joe Ferguson reclaimed his position as the undisputed No. 1 quarterback with 174 passing yards.
September 1, 1971 – BILLS TALK WITH NEW YORK ABOUT MOVE TO YANKEE STADIUM
A Newsweek story reported the Bills had begun talking with New York Mayor John Lindsay about moving the Bills to Yankee Stadium because the Giants had announced their intentions to move to New Jersey in 1975. Speculation arose because of Buffalo's ongoing difficulties in building a new county stadium.
