Watkins surprised, ecstatic to be a Bill

On his pre-draft visit Bills GM Doug Whaley told Sammy Watkins that he was going to move up the draft board to get him. In the pre-draft process the Clemson receiver had been told a lot of things, so he took Whaley's statement as just another bill of sale. On Thursday night when Whaley made good on his promise Watkins was surprised and ecstatic.

"I didn't really think they were going to come up and get me," said Watkins by conference call from New York minutes after being named the Bills first round pick. "I had my interview with them and Doug Whaley just kept telling me that he was going to get me and I thought it was all fun and games because I was on an interview. Then the next thing you know here we are on May 8th and I'm a Buffalo Bill."

Watkins, who one of only two players in Clemson history to generate over 5,000 all-purpose yards (5,129) and also with 3,000 yards receiving (3,391), was widely seen as the top impact player on the offensive side of the ball in the entire draft class.

"I think I bring a lot to the table," said Watkins. "You're going to get a hard player, a guy that loves the game, a guy that understands the game and understands the power of preparation. I think if I just keep doing what I've been doing at Clemson that it will translate to the NFL."

Being the fourth pick in the draft, Watkins realizes he'll be coming to Buffalo with high expectations to take the Bills offense to another level with EJ Manuel, second-year receivers Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin, slot standout Stevie Johnson and tight end Scott Chandler.

"It's a lot (of pressure), but I think for me I'm prepared," said Watkins. "We have a great staff (in Buffalo) that will get me prepared. I've got a lot of great receivers that I can stand behind and get me where I need to get. I need to be 100 percent when I get there and start off on the right foot."

Watkins is likely to be the team's starting split end or 'X' receiver, which should allow Woods to play the flanker position with Johnson in the slot. Buffalo also has proven veteran Mike Williams to line up outside too.

"I'm very excited," Watkins said. "It's a blessing to be a Buffalo Bill now and just to get started with the young guys on the team, EJ, CJ, Robert Woods, Stevie Johnson. It's a blessing."
