'We will adjust' | How the Bills are preparing for primetime game against the Jets

FTLR10.9

The Buffalo Bills now sit at 3-2 ahead of their huge divisional game coming up against the New York Jets on Monday night. They returned to practice on Wednesday following their loss to the Houston Texans. The winner of Monday night's game will determine who sits at first in the AFC East six games into the season.

For the second straight week, the offense struggled to score points in the first half but found success moving the ball and scoring in the second half. After Wednesday's practice QB Josh Allen addressed their slow starts on offense and how they will work to correct them.

"Getting back to our base stuff that we ran in training camp and, just trusting what we call and not trying to be so much in the perfect position, and just trusting what our guys can do," Allen said. "It's kind of as simple as we want to want to make it. We have a lot of guys, with a lot of different skill sets on this team and we want to utilize everybody's talents."

Allen also took ownership for the struggles that they have faced saying, "I've got to be better."

"Ball placement, and a couple throws I wish I could have had back this last game," Allen said. "Just making sure we're on the same page, and it starts with the quarterback. That's on me. Just trying to find ways this next week of sustaining drives, being better on third down, staying out of some of these third-and-long situations."

Head coach Sean McDermott spoke about how he has seen Allen respond to some of the difficulties that they have had scoring the ball.

"You go through a season, it's never a straight line in terms of the path to success," McDermott said. "You've got to go through the ebbs and flows of the season and manage them… I know Josh is as competitive as there is, and we have full confidence in him, and I'm confident he'll get back to doing that, and that's important for us."

Both TE Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox have not recorded more than 47 yards in a game this season and have one touchdown between the two of them. McDermott expressed his confidence in offensive coordinator Joe Brady to find ways to continue blending their personnel and finding ways to get their playmakers the ball.

"There are some things we can do better," McDermott said. "And at the end of the day, no one's trying to not score points. I can promise you that… We will adjust… You lose your way a little bit and you got to find it and you have to go back to, `Hey, what have we done well and why have we done so well?' And then try and try and get back to some of that."

On the other side of their matchup is Jets QB Aaron Rodgers. Last season Rodgers only played four snaps against the Bills in the season opener before tearing his Achilles. With his return to play this season, the Bills still see an elite QB.

"We all know Hall of Famer, really good player, incredibly smart, incredibly gifted, and just does a great job running their offense," McDermott said. "There's more than the challenges with him of he's an elite thrower, right? But there's more challenges to Aaron than just that. It's the mobility, it's the mental part of the game, and just have so much respect for his game and what he's been able to do over the years and how he's done it. So, he's as good as there is."

His former teammate with the Packers, CB Rasul Douglas, spoke after practice about what makes Rodgers so difficult to defend.

"When we would get the scouting report, they would tell us, sometimes you gonna be in great position, and it's still gonna be a completion, and you gotta be okay with that. Like, don't get discouraged… Getting to practice, I remember just like, how the hell did he do this? And it was like, every day, and coaches looking at you saying, 'No, it's okay. It's A-Rod. You're not gonna see nobody else like that…' Every throw, he could make it, whether he was on a move or whether he was standing still."

The Jets have a vast array of options on offense that make them difficult to defend against, including their two running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, along with wide receivers Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard and Mike Williams.

"I think Breece, he does a great job of everything," LB Terrel Bernard said. "He's fast, he's powerful, he can make people miss in the hole and then obviously he's a receiving threat as well… We know how good he is, along with, (Braelon Allen), their rookie right now, both of them together are really, really good."

The Jets defense is also still a formidable force. That unit currently ranks second in yards allowed and have played well against Allen and the Bills in the past. Allen spoke about how to prepare against a defense is talented defense at every level.

"They play really hard-nosed football," Allen said. "Their front is very talented. They've got some talented players in the back end as well. A really good linebacker duo. They're a tough defense to play against. No. 1, I think establishing the run and making sure we can try to commit to that. Again, being smart with where the football's going, how quickly we get it out of our hands."

Homecoming for a Bills CB

Rasul Douglas, a native of New Jersey, has not played in his home state since the 2019 season. Douglas expressed his excitement about playing at home in front of family and friends. He said that at the moment, he has 26 family members and friends that are going to see him play on Monday night, with some more that may be expected.

"I'm a little bit excited," Douglas said. "Fam is going to be there. You know, usually the game where you got to give away the most tickets, buy tickets for family members. So not excited about that, but everything else excited for."

In addition to Douglas, other New Jersey natives will be playing back in their home state, including RB Ray Davis, LT Dion Dawkins, DT Austin Johnson and Ryan Van Demark.
