After defeating the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round, the Buffalo Bills advanced to the AFC Championship for a rematch against the No.1 seed Kansas City Chiefs who they defeated 30-21 in Week 11 of the 2024 season.
The Bills will travel to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday for a chance to advance to their first Super Bowl since 1994. Here's what experts are saying ahead of the pivotal game.
Battista writes that Allen was the biggest winner of the Divisional Round as he bullied his way into the end zone for two touchdowns. Now this game on Sunday will be a legacy-defining game for the quarterback as they prepare to face the Chiefs.
"The Bills had lost in the Divisional Round in each of the past three seasons. Allen made sure it did not happen again to set up a rematch with the Chiefs. When the Bills beat them in November, Allen made clear that the only thing that really mattered was if Buffalo could do it in January. In what will be a legacy-defining game for Allen, we're about to find out."- Battista
The Bills advanced to the AFC Championship game for the first time since the 2020 season and as Buscaglia writes, they have a chance to beat the final boss as they are a very different team than they were the last time they were in this position.
"The last time the Bills were in the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs turned them away at Arrowhead Stadium. The Bills are now a much different team and have certainly learned their lessons in the playoffs and otherwise. Now they get the chance to beat the final boss at the end of the video game, and finally, for the first time since McDermott became head coach, advance to a round in the playoffs further than the Chiefs."- Buscaglia
Edholm believes that both teams are capable of winning and advancing to the Super Bowl in this heavyweight battle between the quarterbacks.
"Since Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen have risen to prominence, Chiefs-Bills has been just about as good a rivalry the NFL has offered in recent years. They'll now meet for the second time in the AFC Championship Game and for the fourth time in the postseason. The Bills have won three of the past four head-to-head meetings, and they were the only team to take down the back-to-back champs at full strength this season, 30-21, in Highmark Stadium. But those wins came in the regular season… You can't ask for much more than this. While both the Chiefs and Bills are flawed, each are capable of winning it all. But only one team can, and it could come down to the heavyweight battle of star quarterbacks."- Edholm
The ESPN host believes that the Bills can beat the Chiefs on Sunday because of Josh Allen and the weapons that they have. He emphasized that Allen must show up in order for the Bills to advance.
"They could definitely do it, because Josh Allen is that dude, and they have enough weapons to make things happen… Now that Lamar Jackson is gone, what you gonna do Josh Allen…? Now that he's gone and you're the one knocking on the door, who's gonna knock off Patrick Mahomes…? We're looking at you now… What they care about is that it's your turn now. You that dude, you're an MVP candidate, show up."- Smith
Eisen said that Sunday was the first time that he heard Allen acknowledge some of the outside noise surrounding the team, but he believes that this team is the best sum of their parts in how they win games.
"That's exactly what I've been saying all year long… It's the first time I've heard Josh Allen all year go talk about the narrative of nobody believed in us. He's kind to turned that down, and the fact that he's saying it now gives you an idea of how it's been bubbling beneath the surface… We will hear a lot more of the nobody believing in the Bills going into this game, because they've never done it in the playoffs against Mahomes. They've only done it in the regular season, like this year."- Eisen
Romo, who will be on the call on Sunday, said that he is looking forward to seeing if the Bills have learned from the past and be able to take down the Chiefs.
"I also think that preparation sometimes you can only learn through experience… Right now, we're going to find out if Buffalo has learned from their past experiences when they go to Kansas City and take on the champs. We're sitting there waiting. I thought this week was going to be huge. I can't even imagine by next week. Man, this is gonna be fun."- Romo
Cowherd said that he believes that Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes have separated themselves as the best quarterbacks in the NFL and believes that if the Bills advance that they will win the Super Bowl.
"I think Buffalo's going to go ahead into Arrowhead and win. They're pretty healthy. Milano again, making nice plays… I think Josh Allen and Mahomes have separated themselves as the best two quarterbacks in the league. I think Kansas City or Buffalo are going to win the Super Bowl, one of those two."- Cowherd
The former NFL quarterback and current analyst believes that this game is going to come down to quarterback play between both Mahomes and Allen.
"I think that you see Patrick Mahomes in the big moments kind of make ridiculous plays, and then they will need to put it on Josh Allen's back, Buffalo will, in order to move the football against that defense… I think it'll be a confident team going into Arrowhead… The better coaches that we have the National Football League right now, their messaging to their teams, I think you always see it, Scott, sometimes I think it's as quick as you talking to Sean McDermott right after a game and he's already talking to his team. I think they're both good at preparing their teams that way. That's why it's one of the reasons why I think the teams are going to be prepared. I think it's going to come down on the quarterbacks."- Hasselbeck
The Fox Sports host began by giving Josh Allen his credit for continuing to stay disciplined in games this year and believes that whichever team wins this game will go to and win the Super Bowl.
"I want to double down, giving Josh credit because he really is fighting against who he is to be this type of player. I think he still wants to be that guy, but is like, white knuckling it, like, 'No, it's not the best way for this team to win. So, I will sacrifice…' I have thought all year long, Buffalo's the second-best team in the league. I still think it. I think next week is the Super Bowl. I think the winner of that game is winning the Super Bowl."- Wright
