He's a former NFL first-round draft choice and Bills GM Buddy Nix had a big hand in drafting him for the San Diego Chargers in 2007. So it wasn't all that surprising that after being released by the Chargers last Thursday (7/28) that one of Craig "Buster" Davis' first free agent visits was with Buffalo.
Davis (6'1" 210) arrived at Bills training camp on the St. John Fisher campus late Thursday afternoon. He's scheduled to work out for the Bills' personnel staff.
Since his rookie season of 2007, the LSU product has had trouble climbing San Diego's depth chart with the likes of Vincent Jackson, Chris Chambers and Malcolm Floyd on the roster in recent years. Injuries have also played a role in keeping Davis from developing into a productive talent.
The former first-round pick saw work in the slot as a rookie posting 20 catches for 188 yards and a touchdown in 2007. Davis was only healthy for four games in 2008, thanks to a severe groin injury that landed him on injured reserve and required surgery. He appeared in just one game in 2009. In 2010 just when it looked like it would be a promising season for Davis he could not successfully fight through a rib injury and his groin problems returned. He was again placed on injured reserve.
Despite playing in just seven games last year, he did post career highs in receptions and receiving yards as a reserve receiver for San Diego (21 rec. 259 yds, 1 TD).
In four NFL seasons Davis has appeared in 26 games with 51 receptions for 558 yards and two touchdowns.
