Former Buffalo Bills defensive end Marcellus Wiley will be the Legend of the Game for Buffalo's game on Sunday afternoon against the New England Patriots.
Wiley was drafted by the Buffalo Bills as the No. 52 pick in the 1997 NFL Draft. During his four seasons with the Bills, Wiley racked up 19.0 sacks, 5 forced fumbles and 130 total tackles. Wiley broke out in his fourth year with the Bills compiling 10.5 sacks.
"It's an honor, but it's surreal," Wiley said. "You just don't think that it can all come full circle, and then you get to come back, you get to be a part of the weekend. It's such an honor, and to be in front of the crowd… still rooting the team on with the same energy, I just can't wait."
He is looking forward to seeing Bills Mafia again as he said they are global, not just nationwide.
"I'll never forget, of all the teams I played for, all the things I've seen in NFL was the days we used to go out to Wednesday practice and see some of those Buffalo Bills fans already tailgating, and I'm like, 'Y'all know we play on Sunday?' 'They're like, yeah, we know. We just getting ready,' and it's Wednesday," Wiley said. "I couldn't believe it… Everybody knows, if you're a Bills fan, you're all in for sure."
Wiley said that he loves where the Bills are this season as they sit at 11-3 and hold the No. 2 seed in the AFC.
"I love it," Wiley said. "Some would say we are even better (than previous seasons), and it's just good to watch, because Josh Allen is such a leader, such a talent, and he's he just in his own he's in his zone right now. He knows that this is his team, and it's going to go one way with one heartbeat… This year, we really feel like we're gonna do something special."
He knows that the Bills will be ready to play their division rival New England Patriots. Even though they sit at the bottom of the AFC East, they are a division rival and a tough out.
"As soon as you see that Patriots uniform, it's hard not to be haunted by their greatness, even if it's not the same team, it's still the same organization," Wiley said. "It's a division rival, those are always tougher than advertised… It's not a game you can overlook, and that's a great matchup for a team like us who's still trying to sharpen our knives and make sure we're ready to come playoff time."
Since retiring from the NFL, Wiley has been involved with his foundation, Project Transition, along with being a television and media personality, previously hosting shows on ESPN and Fox Sports and now hosting his podcast Hydration Situation on his YouTube channel.
"You got to keep the same passion and energy you had towards football," Wiley said. "I was able to just have so many great experiences in front of the camera, working with so many tremendous talents and hosting and broadcasting… No other place you get that same energy where you turn the lights on and that red light comes on in the studio, I'm ready to go. I feel that juice the same way you do when you heard that ball get kicked off, and you hear those crowds and the fans going crazy… And the journey is just beginning… I'm really excited about what's to come."
Wiley will join Bills Mafia in rooting on the Bills as they take on the New England Patriots on Sunday at 4:25 p.m.
