What they're saying: Bills look ahead after primetime loss to the Jets

Head coach Sean McDermott

On if this was just one of those games…

Yeah, you're right. This is uncharacteristic of this team to date, the way we've played so far. We've got to learn from it. We got outcoached, we got outplayed and fundamentally we weren't very good. And then you look at the penalties, some of those you could call aggressive, a few of them, but other than that, we can't do that and expect to win a game in the NFL. We've got to get better and we'll learn from this. No excuses. Give credit to the opponent, to the Jets, they beat us straight up tonight.

On the line of scrimmage battle…

Well, it starts up front every week. It does. We need to do a better job of establishing the line of scrimmage early in the game. Again, give credit to the Jets.

On what the Jets were doing to get pressure on Tyrod Taylor…

They were challenging us with an eight-man box and doing some good stuff up front. Really, it was just fundamentally they were doing some good things technique-wise. Obviously, we can do a better job in that area.

On if getting a pass rush is becoming a concern…

Well, you have to be able to affect the quarterback. You know that. You've heard me talk a lot about that. So, we've got to look at the film and just see where and why things were happening the way they were, the scramble in the first quarter and the scramble for the touchdown. So, we've got to be coordinated up front, in particular when you've got a mobile quarterback that can run like Josh (McCown) can run. And so we're going to take a hard look at that this week. You have to be able to affect the quarterback in this league.

On if he has to build the team back up again…

Well, I think you've got to start by being honest. When we look at the tape we'll get a good feel for where things went awry there. I thought we had a good week of preparation. You just take a look at the tape and see. I know fundamentally, I know we can do some things better as well. So, we'll just take a good hard look at the tape and be honest with ourselves. That's where it starts. In order for us to move forward and grow from it you have to be honest with yourselves, and I can assure you we'll do that.

On what Benjamin adds to the team…

Well, he's obviously a very good receiver and (General Manager) Brandon (Beane) did a good job of identifying Kelvin and we're anxious to get him going and get him up to speed and get him acclimated with his teammates, continue to do that, and learn the offense. We'll look at him this week as we get going.

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor

On if the Jets were more aggressive this game…

They were definitely aggressive today. Like I said, it's something we've seen on film. You can't really compare them to the first time (we played) because (after) the first game, they had a couple of games to see what guys do well and play to their strengths. Today, they just went out there and played better than we did.

On if Zay Jones would have scored a touchdown if he hadn't been injured…

Yes, you'd like to think so. It was definitely a big gain for us. He made the safety miss. Hopefully the injury isn't too bad. Roughing was called.

He's a warrior. He wants to be out there on the field. He wants to compete. He's a confident guy. I hope the injury isn't too bad. I want him out there on the field because I know his passion for the game and how he wants to be out there.

**

On what has been their struggles with road games…**

They are all different. I wouldn't say it boils down to one thing. What we have to do better is execute and stop the negative plays. Tonight, we had a couple of turnovers on offense. That's not our style of play. The games we've won and been successful, we've protected the ball. Myself included. I had a fumble tonight and that's not what I do. You have to be able to protect the ball on the road. You can't give those teams those opportunities, especially on short fields. We're going to have to regroup as an offense and regroup as a team and come back and (get ready) for the Saints.

Running back LeSean McCoy

On the difference between the Jets defense this game and Week One…

They beat us down. They were running to the ball fast, they were on their gaps (and) their routes to the ball. They communicated. Everything we did, they kind of stopped it. So give them a lot of credit. On a short week, they studied hard on film. The big plays we like to run, they took them out.

On being 5-3 at the midway point…

We're not going to panic. We lost a division game, that's tough for us. We're 5-3, we'll move on, go out next week and get a win, then we're 6-3 and everybody's still applauding us. But this is good for us, I think - some humble pie. A lot of people kind of doubted us, then we started winning games and people pat us on the back and (told) us how good we are and then you see what happened tonight. So, in the grand scheme of things, I think it's probably good for us.

On how they handled the adversity late in the game…

I think adversity hit us and we didn't respond well, particularly myself. I didn't play well at all. I took it as a challenge knowing guys were coming in here trying to stop me, stop the run and I didn't respond well at all. It's something we have to work at. It's a loss, we'll go back to the drawing board, watch the tape, learn from it. We'll have a nice time off, get the bodies right and get ready for the next game.

Cornerback Tre'Davious White

On whether he felt the defense was out of sync…

No, I didn't. The Jets played a great game. They definitely outplayed us. I picked the wrong night to play the worst game of my life, man. I gave up, what, two touchdowns? The game was 7-10, I gave up a touchdown pass. The next touchdown I gave up, I missed a tackle. It's going to be a long two days for me. I don't know what to say, man. I played the worst (game) of my life. Cost us another game. I cost us the Cincinnati game and now I cost us this one. I don't know what it is. I prepared well, got great rest, I did my usual thing, but I don't know.

On whether Josh McCown threw a perfect pass on the touchdown to Robby Anderson…

It's a perfect throw and I don't make a play on the ball. I had bad coverage. I don't know what to say. I felt like coming into the game, I felt great. My body felt great even though it's my first time on a short week. I don't know what it is. It's just the worst game that I ever played in my life. Second time costing the team the win. It's devastating.

On his missed tackle on Matt Forte's touchdown run…

I came up. He made a great move. Like I said, I don't know. I felt good about myself coming in. Stuff just didn't go my way tonight.

Linebacker Preston Brown

On tonight's performance was a surprise after a strong start to the season…

We have to do better. I don't know if it was a surprise, they took advantage of us. We have to find ways to play better on defense. (We need to) stop the run, stop the pass. We have to get better.

On if he thought the Jets were capable of a game like this…

Definitely. They have weapons on the offensive side, they have a good (offensive) line. They opened up gaps and those backs ran hard today. They ran well.

On the Bills performance…

We had a lot of takeaways, we've been giving up yards. The last couple weeks, when we've found ways to get the ball back, the offense held on to the ball. This week, it was the opposite. We have to find ways to take the ball away. We weren't the best defense (today) and we'll lose every game (playing) like that.
