Josh Allen's historic 2024 regular season has earned the Buffalo Bills QB one of the NFL's highest honors, the AP Most Valuable Player.
Allen finished his 7th career season with 4,269 total yards, 41 total touchdowns and the fewest turnovers of his career (8). Among his many NFL records set this season, Allen became the first player in NFL history with 5 straight 40+ total TD seasons.
Led by Allen, the Bills exceeded preseason expectations by finishing with a 13-4 record and a fifth-straight AFC East division title. Throughout the 2024 season, Allen cemented himself as the league's most valuable player with jaw-dropping plays, remarkable statistical achievements and continued team success. Allen is the first Bills player since RB Thurman Thomas (1991) to win NFL MVP, and first Bills QB ever to do so.
Allen won the award with 27 first place votes and 383 total points. Runner-up QB Lamar Jackson received 23 first place votes and 362 total points.
"I'd like to think the Bills organization, Terry and Kim Pegula, Brandon Beane, Sean McDermott, thank you guys for drafting me seven and a half years ago. It feels just like yesterday, it really does. I know this is an individual award and it says Most Valuable Player on it, but I think it's derived from team success, and I love my team," Allen said during his acceptance speech at NFL Honors.
Here are just a few of Allen's individual accomplishments this season:
- First player in NFL history with 5 straight 40+ total TD seasons.
- First QB in NFL history with 6+ rushing TDs in 7 consecutive seasons.
- Now has the most wins (76), total TDs (262) & total yards (30,595) by any player all-time in their first 7 seasons.
- First QB in NFL history with a passing, rushing & receiving TD in a single game.
- Set a franchise record for total TDs (262), surpassing Jim Kelly (244).
- First QB in NFL history to record multiple pass TDs, multiple rush TDs, 350+ passing yards & 60+ rushing yards in the same game (including playoffs)
- First NFL player all-time with at least two TD passes & two rushing TDs in consecutive games and is the first player all-time with three such games in a season.
- First player all-time with 3+ pass TD and 3+ rush TD in the same game.
As a team, Allen helped guide the Bills to one of the best seasons (13-4) in franchise history: Buffalo clinched the AFC East in Week 13, which marked the earliest a team had clinched their division since 2009.
The Bills also:
- Set franchise records for touchdowns (63) & points scored (509).
- Tied an NFL-record by scoring 30+ points in 8 consecutive games.
- Went undefeated at home for the third time in team history and first since 1990.
- Lead the AFC in point differential (+164) going into Week 18
- Protecting the Football: 8 giveaways are the fewest by any team since 1990.
- Sack Avoidance: 14 sacks are the fewest by any team since 2009 (Payton Manning won MVP), including 1 sack the last 6 games.
- Points/Possession: Bills averaged over 3 points per possession, the last team to do that was the 2020 GB Packers (Aaron Rodgers won MVP).
- First NFL team in history to beat two 14-win teams in the regular season. Josh Allen combined for 747 total yds, 6 TD, 0 sacks in those games.
Allen's ultimate goal is still to lead the Buffalo Bills to their first-ever Super Bowl championship as he enters his eighth NFL season in 2025. However, Allen's impact on and off the field in 2024 will always be remembered.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott shared earlier this season why Allen is deserving of this year's MVP.
"I've been around this league long enough to know to see MVPs every year for many years. And what Josh has done on this team and this organization in this community -- and no offense to anybody else -- but I've got a hard time believing that someone's done more. I really believe that," McDermott said.
Allen was in attendance at NFL Honors in New Orleans to accept the award. He was joined by his fiancé Hailee Steinfeld, his parents as well as McDermott and GM Brandon Beane.
"We got such a great locker room in Buffalo, and it takes everybody. From the equipment staff to the training room to the strength staff to Slick Rick in the mailroom and the cafeteria upstairs. It truly takes everybody to have team success, and I'm so fortunate to be a part of a great organization," Allen shared.
Allen also thanked his family for their unwavering support through his football journey.
"I'd like to thank Joel and LaVonne, my parents. In my 20 plus years of playing football, going down to Pop Warner, I bet you they've missed maybe 15 games in their entire life. They are so dedicated to supporting me and my favorite teammates who are my sister, my brother and my little sister. Nicala, Jason, MaKenna, thank you guys for all the support, all the time, money, energy wasted growing up from going from meet to game to practice every day. I love you guys. I know you take a lot of pride in this as well. And last but not least, my fiancé. Hailee, you've been my rock, you're my best friend. I would not be saying on a stage, if it weren't for you," Allen said.
