Who To Root For

AFC Playoff Picture | Who Buffalo Bills fans should be rooting for in Week 16

The Bills are likely to be favored in each of their last three games but nothing is guaranteed in the NFL, especially when playing divisional opponents three straight weeks.

Buffalo is the No. 2 seed in the AFC heading into Week 16 and finishes the 2024 season with home games against the Patriots, Jets and road finale at the Patriots. The Bills got a big boost in Week 15 with their win over the Lions along with a loss by the Steelers against the Eagles.

Heading into Week 16 here's how the AFC Playoff Picture looks:

  1. Kansas City Chiefs (13-1)*
  2. Buffalo Bills (11-3)*
  3. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-4)
  4. Houston Texans (9-5)*
  5. Baltimore Ravens (9-5)
  6. Los Angeles Chargers (9-6)
  7. Denver Broncos (9-6)

*Clinched Division

If the season ended today, Buffalo would host the Broncos in the Wild Card Round.

Here's who Bills fans should root for in Week 16 to help their playoff seeding.

Houston Texans (9-5) at Kansas City Chiefs (13-1) | Saturday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. | NBC

Who to root for: Root for the Texans

Why: The Bills still have a legitimate chance at securing home field advantage in the playoffs. Buffalo needs Kansas City to drop at least two of their final three games to end the season: vs. Houston, at Pittsburgh, at Denver.

Heading into Week 16, the Bills have a 29% chance of earning the No. 1 seed, according to the New York Times Playoff Simulator. A Chiefs loss to the Texans, along with the Bills win over the Patriots would increase Buffalo's chances of getting the 1-seed to 50%.

A Chiefs win would make it difficult for the Bills to get the 1-seed at just a 14% chance. Additionally, a Chiefs win over the Texans would give KC a chance to clinch the No. 1 seed with a win in Week 17.

Pittsburgh Steelers (10-4) at Baltimore Ravens (9-5) | Saturday, Dec. 21 at 4:30 p.m. | FOX

Who to root for: Root for the Ravens

Why: The Bills control their own destiny for a top 2 seed in the AFC and would at minimum be the No. 2 seed with three wins in their final three games.

However, the Bills could clinch a top 2 seed earlier than Week 18 with help from the Ravens this week. A loss by the Steelers gives Buffalo a 70% chance of earning the 2-seed should it beat the Patriots this week.

The Bills would then just need one win in their final two games to assure themselves of a top 2 seed. Knowing that they'd be at least the No. 2 seed going into Week 18 would give the Bills a chance to rest their starters before the Wild Card Round.

Best Case Scenario:

  • A Bills win + Chiefs loss + Steelers loss would give Buffalo a 50% chance at earning the No. 1 seed in the AFC and a 47% chance at earning the No. 2 seed.
