The Buffalo Bills have announced several changes to the coaching staff ahead of the 2023 season.
Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has decided to take a year off from coaching.
With Frazier as their DC, the Bills have had multiple seasons where the defense ranked top five in the NFL. Since 2017, the Bills have allowed an average of 20 points per game (3rd in the NFL over that span), 315 total yards per game (1st), 202 passing yards per game (1st), 107 passing touchdowns (1st), have racked up 99 interceptions (2nd) and 158 takeaways (2nd).
Frazier plans to return for the 2024 season.
The Bills have hired Al Holcomb and Adam Henry to join Buffalo's staff, while Austin Gund and Kyle Shurmur will take on new coaching roles.
Holcomb joins the team as a senior defensive assistant and Henry has been named the wide receivers coach.
Holcomb's last stop was with the Carolina Panthers where he spent two seasons as the interim defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Prior to that, he was the linebackers coach and run game coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in 2019.
The New York native has also been on staff with the Cardinals (2018) and Giants (2009-2012).
Holcomb also reunites with Bills head coach Sean McDermott as the two were on staff together in Carolina. Holcomb was the linebackers coach for the Panthers from 2013-2017 when McDermott was the defensive coordinator from 2011-2016.
The senior defensive assistant won Super Bowl XLVI with the Giants during the 2011 season when they beat the Patriots 21-17.
Henry spent last season with Indiana University as the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. Henry has had multiple stops in the NFL and in college football.
Previously, Henry has been the wide receivers coach for the Cowboys (2020-2021), Browns (2018-2019), Giants (2016-2017) and 49ers (2015).
The McNeese Sports Hall of Famer played wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints from 1994-1996.
Gund moves from offensive quality control coach to offensive assistant/offensive line coach. Prior to Buffalo, Gund spent a few seasons at Wake Forest as their graduate assistant and worked primarily with the offensive line. Gund played collegiately as an offensive lineman for the University of Richmond.
Shurmur moves from defensive quality control coach to offensive quality control coach. Prior to Buffalo, Shurmur spent 2021 as one of Washington's backup quarterbacks. He has also played for the Chiefs, Broncos and Bengals.
