The Buffalo Bills announced a new addition to their coaching staff Thursday. Head coach Sean McDermott hired Eric Washington as his new defensive line coach.

Washington, 50, was most recently the defensive coordinator in Carolina under former head coach Ron Rivera. He served in that capacity for the Panthers for the last two seasons. Prior to that he was Carolina's defensive line coach for seven season (2011-2017).

Washington worked with McDermott for six of those seasons when the Bills head coach was the Panthers defensive coordinator (2011-2016).

Under Washington's tutelage in Carolina, DT Kawann Short reached the Pro Bowl and Charles Johnson accumulated 41 sacks over four seasons.

Washington replaces former defensive line coach Bill Teerlinck, who accepted a defensive line coaching position at Virginia Tech under Justin Fuente. The two coached together early in their careers at Illinois State.

In 2019, the Buffalo Bills celebrated their 60th season as a franchise by going 10-6 in the regular season and clinching the AFC's fifth seed. It is the second time in three seasons under Sean McDermott that the Bills have qualified for the playoffs, and was a great way to celebrate the 60th season of the Buffalo Bills and the 100th season of the NFL.
