Cornerback E.J. Gaines agrees to terms with the Bills

Gaines Announcement

He was signed as a free agent by Buffalo in 2017. After a year in Cleveland, he re-signed with the Bills in 2019, but a training camp injury prematurely ended his season. Cornerback E.J. Gaines is hoping that the third time is the charm as he agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Buffalo on Thursday.

Gaines, 28, missed all of last season after he sustained a core muscle injury in training camp with the Bills and was placed on injured reserve. The team released him a week later.

The Bills and the cornerback are hoping Gaines can recapture his 2017 form with Buffalo when he started 11 games and was among the team leaders in pass breakups and had three forced fumbles and an interception.

Gaines also offers some position flexibility with experience both outside and in the slot.

He played for the Browns in 2018, appearing in six games with two starts, but after suffering a pair of concussions in a three-week span Gaines again wound up on I-R.

Gaines is a former sixth-round pick of the St. Louis Rams (2014) and a former PFWA All-Rookie team selection.
