The preseason is finally here. Time to get a look at some of the more intriguing additions to the roster when real football is being played. Here are a handful to be aware of on Saturday.
1 – TE Zach Davidson
The tall, lanky tight end has been making plays on a pretty consistent basis through training camp in the passing game. He might've been the best offensive player on the field in the Return of the Blue & Red practice last Friday. Look for him to carry that playmaking ability into the preseason opener Saturday as he makes a case for a roster spot.
2 – DT Branson Deen
The undrafted rookie out of Miami has flashed on the defensive interior, getting penetration and wedging his way into tight spaces to push the pocket. With a frame similar to Ed Oliver, Deen plays a similar style, but he'll need to continue to show up on tape through the preseason.
3 – G David Edwards
Last year's sixth offensive linemen for jumbo packages moves into the starting lineup in Connor McGovern's vacated left guard spot. A four-year starter for the Rams right out of college, Edwards is a proven starting caliber guard with a Super Bowl title already on his resume.
4 – WR Tyrell Shavers
Coming off a solid training camp, Shavers has to translate his ability to make plays in the practice setting to the preseason field. The tall, angular wideout has a giant catch radius, which has made him a valuable tool outside in the passing game. He's also worked to earn a gunner role on punt coverage, which could help cement a roster spot for the first-year player.
5 – Edge Javon Solomon
The fifth-round pick has impressed outside observers as well as the coaches and teammates. Blessed with long arms and giant hands (11 inches) it helps him overcome his lack of height to win in pass rushing situations. He too has flashed, but preseason games might be the forum in which some of his closing skills can truly shine.
